Tiki figures detailed with inlaid paua shell eyes feature to opposing faces of the box while intricate spiral patterns adorn the remaining faces. Each design features finely carved linear detailing adding superb definition to the designs and a wonderfully tactile element to the form. The original lid with complimentary carved detailing perfectly completes this exceptional example. This piece displays a pleasing amount of age, has been masterfully hand carved with exceptional attention to detail and the wood exhibits exquisite red tones.SIZE: This impressive Maori Tiki box stands approx 120mms tall excluding the knob upon the lid and measures 100mms square in width. WEIGHT: This piece weighs 295 grams.CONDITION: This piece is presented in excellent vintage condition with no big chips or cracks. Lights signs of age including the odd small scuff and nibble beautifully enhances the charm and character of this authentically vintage example. This exquisite vintage piece has been well cared for and presents spectacularly.MARKS: This box is beautifully stamped to the base with an impressed \"Mountain Totara NZ Made by Rata\" mark. The numeral \"15\" is stamped to the inner base. THE TIMBER: Mountain Totara is durable, resistant to rot and straight-grained making it a perfect building material for the Māori who used it for making waka (canoes), houses, tools, weapons, musical instruments, toys and storage containers (patua and pōhā) for preserving food. It is one of the best woods for carving with stone tools. Because of its value and special properties, the Tōtara was also a symbol of nobility, chieftainship and social solidarity.
