Unusual Antique Chinese Silver Salt Shaker, Turtle carrying a Tower (Stele) on back.
This unusual Antique Silver Salt Shaker shows a Turtle carrying a Tower (Stele) on his back and displays many Chinese inscriptions.
There are four Chinese characters impressed in the bottom of the shaker which appear to translate as sterling silver. They are on the little door that slides open to fill the shaker. The turtle is intricately designed with an hexagonal cell pattern on the shell. There are markings all around the body and he has an open mouth where the salt comes out.
The tower on his back is beyond description but we will try. The stele is 2” rising from his back, and is decorated up and down on each side with vines. The two Chinese symbols on the front translate to Beijing and the two on the back represent good fortune and longevity. The larger piece on top is decorated with two intertwined dragons on the front and back, and there is also a small square with Chinese marks. In Chinese culture, turtles are sacred animals that symbolize good fortune and longevity.
