Union Pacific Big Boy #4017 Steam Locomotive Postcard – Harriman, Wyoming – 1958
A wonderful collectible railroad postcard featuring the legendary Union Pacific Big Boy #4017, one of the most famous classes of steam locomotives ever built in America.
This colorful photograph captures the massive ALCO-built 4-8-8-4 articulated steam locomotive making a coaling stop at Harriman, Wyoming, on October 6, 1958, while hauling a westbound freight train.
Photographed by Robert F. Collins, the scene offers a remarkable view of Big Boy #4017 alongside an imposing railroad coaling tower, with freight cars stretching into the distance.
The photograph beautifully documents the final years of large-scale steam locomotive operations on the Union Pacific Railroad.
Historical Significance
The Union Pacific Big Boy locomotives were among the largest and most powerful steam locomotives ever built.
Twenty-five Big Boys were constructed by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) between 1941 and 1944 to handle heavy freight trains over the challenging grades of the Union Pacific system.
With their massive articulated 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, these remarkable locomotives became enduring symbols of American railroad engineering and the golden age of steam.
Union Pacific Big Boy #4017 was one of these legendary locomotives and is particularly noteworthy because it has been preserved. Today, the actual locomotive is displayed at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
This postcard captures #4017 in October 1958, near the end of its working career, while still hauling freight through Wyoming.
