This specific variant—featuring a funeral urn with snakes emerging from each side—is one of the most historically significant and sought-after designs in early American militaria and Washingtonia exonumia. The Imagery (Urn with Snakes): While the neoclassical funerary urn represents deep national grief, the two snakes emerging from the sides carry an intense allegorical meaning. In early American political iconography, snakes often represented eternal life, wisdom, or geopolitical defiance (echoing the Revolutionary "Join, or Die" motifs).Period Borders: The center medallion is enclosed by a fine, beaded circular border. The outermost rim features a spectacular "crinkled" or pie-crust style gadrooned border, which is highly characteristic of Federal-period brass metalwork.

• The Patina: The piece shows an absolutely gorgeous, untouched dark green and reddish-brown soil patina. The white-ish oxidation spots are standard for cast copper-alloy (brass/bronze) items that have spent over two centuries buried in the sandy, acidic soil of Long Island.
• has a slight rim bend as pictured but over all has been incredibly preserved for an artifact that spent 200+ years in the ground. while it remains in its original uncleaned condition it has been stabilized and conserved.
• The reverse: the reverse clearly shows a heavy partial central post that has broken confirming its use a bridle ornament that would have passed through the leather straps and secured them during funeral processions rather then a button or badge to be worn by processioners.
