Rare bronze medal issued by the Municipal Committee of New YorkCity to commemorate the reception held in 1899 to honor Admiral George Dewey, naval hero of the Spanish-American War, and the only U.S. admiral to hold the rank of Admiral of the Navy. The medal is ca.35 mm in diameter, and is in near extremely fine condition, excluding the ribbon. The reverse of themedal depicts abattleship on the sea, most likely Dewey\'s flagship, the U.S.S.Olympia. The medal is complete with the original unique brooch, which features a 19thcentury naval cannon with chain links that suspend the “Municipal Committee”badge. The brooch still has a portion of the original ribbon, which hasseparated from the medal.
