US House of Representatives 1901 Leather Trunk Chest 35\" x 17.5\" x 17.5\"
This trunk is owned by Tom Eddie, great grandson of the original owner South Trimble, and was probably bought new in 1901.South Trimble (1864 –1946) was a three term U.S. Representative from Kentucky and twice Clerk of the U.S. House for a total of 23 years. Trimble served as a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives 1898-1900 and as Speaker in 1900. He was married in 1885 to Miss Carrie Bell Allan of Galveston, TX.Trimble was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-seventh, Fifty-eighth, and Fifty-ninth Congresses (1901–1907). In 1906 he was an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky. He was twice Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, first from 1911-1919.He then temporarily retired from public life and operated a plantation near Selma, Alabama. He again served as Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1931 until his death in Washington, D.C. in 1946. In news reels he can be seen standing next to FDR as war on Japan was declared in 1941.
One of the handles is cracked and the other is mostly missing. There are some cuts in the outside leather of the trunk. An old partial page of a newspaper has attached itself to the inside of the trunk. I\'m leaving it in there for your amusement.
\"House of Representatives U.S.\" can be seen on the side with the leather handle.
More info about South Trimble is on wiki: trunk isn\'t heavy, but the 36\" dimension makes shipping expensive. I\'m in the Salt Lake Area and can arrange a local pickup.
