For Sale today:A scarce original publication by longtime Tufts College Professorand Author William R. Ransom (1875 to 1973)The New York Times Obituary describes hisand his families deep connection to Tufts College.
MEDFORD, Mass., Jan. 10—William R. Ransom, who retired as a professor of mathematics at Tufts University in 1950 at the age of 75 after a half century of teaching, died yesterday in the Winchester Hospital. He was 97 years old.
Tufts was preordained for Professor Ransom. His parents were married by a president of the college, seven members of his family preceded him as students there, and he was named for William R. Shipman, the first dean of Tufts.
William Ransom received bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics from Tufts in the same year, 1898, an unusual achievement, and added a master's in mathematics from Harvard in 1903 and an honorary degree in science from Tufts in 1962.
On that occasion the citation noted that “Professor Ransom is the most richly rewarded of teachers through the distinguished careers of his former students; a part of Tufts for more than 60.91 per cent of its history, and a teacher and mathematician whose influence cannot be computed by slide rule or described by calculus.”
