This whole region was to become known some years later as Lower Canada and ultimately, the Province of Quebec. The first permanent settlement by Europeans came in 1639 by the French, led by Jacques Cartier, with the primary intention of exploiting the fur trade. Shortly thereafter, in 1642, the village became known as Ville Marie. Jumping ahead to 1760, the French were joined by a minority of English settlers after French North America fell into English hands after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, near where Quebec City is today. In due course, it became known as Montreal, named for the mountain, Mount Royal, that it was built around, and was formally incorporated as a city in 1832. Together, the two linguistic groups developed Montreal into the largest city in Canada until surpassed by Toronto in more recent years. All pictures are of the actual item.
