The 88 Keys That Opened Doors Description Publisher Independently published Publication date June 22, 2021 Language English Print length 211 pages ISBN-13 979-8507589340 Item Weight 12 ounces Dimensions 6 x 0.48 x 9 inches
When Charles Smith, a young African-American Chicagoan with autism and musical savant abilities, went off to college, his parents encouraged him to keep a journal to help him work through his anxieties. Those journal entries are the foundation of his memoir, The 88 Keys That Opened Many Doors. The book tells of Smith\'s struggles and triumphs from his earliest memories through his present life as a gifted pianist and composer who has not been able to find full-time work, despite his doctoral degree in music from the University of Illinois. This memoir holds a unique appeal to three distinct groups: persons with disabilities and their loved ones, musicians, and African-Americans, especially those with ties to Chicago.
Like Temple Grandin, the world-renowned autism specialist, Dr. Charles Smith is keenly aware of his autism and can articulate some of his unique and sometimes startling insights about his own thoughts and behaviors. Layered into his journey, Charles explores his strengths and shortcomings with his studies, his intense fears of fireworks, and his constant quest for love and acceptance from friends and competitors in the various worlds he has occupied – therapeutic public school, academia, the international piano circuit, competitive ballroom dancing, and the Chicago avant-garde \"DIY\" music scene. Dr. Smith spent nearly ten years, while working on his doctorate, traveling the U. S. and Europe to attend music conferences and play piano among several groups of accomplished musicians. This was all due to the persistence of two talented teachers and a special woman who believed in his ability to succeed. While few of his early dreams have yet to be realized, Charles Smith has lived an active life in Chicago as a prolific composer, musician, performer, and accompanist. His gifts with 88 keys have indeed opened many doors, even if they have not opened the grand door to stardom that he envisioned as a younger man.
