TWO WOMEN SELLING ROSES FOR VETERANS : 1928 BOSTON HERALD :PRESS PHOTO : WWI ERA: $45.00
This is an original 1928 press photograph measuring approximately 8 x 10 inches, showing two pretty and stylish young women participating in a public fundraising effort for disabled veterans of World War I. The photo was taken by Jimmy Jones of the Boston Herald and is stamped and annotated on the reverse. The image is also dated April 21, 1928. The photograph features Miss Julia King (left) and Miss Muriel Goodere (right), who are both described by the visual record as attractive, composed, and warmly dressed, likely for the cool spring weather. They are standing side by side outside a stone building, each holding a pail marked “Navy Club – Disabled Veterans” and offering small bouquets of roses to passersby in exchange for donations. Both women are dressed in stylish outerwear typical of the late 1920s—wool coats with fur or plush collars, layered over their street dresses. Their wide-brimmed hats are particularly eye-catching: one trimmed with a heavy feather plume, the other adorned with a veil and lace embellishments. Across their torsos are sashes reading:\"Army and Navy Club for Service Men and Disabled Veterans.\"Their expressions are calm and welcoming. Miss King smiles slightly beneath her veil, while Miss Goodere maintains a pleasant, reserved demeanor. The photograph captures not just their appearance, but a patriotic and charitable moment reflective of post-WWI America’s commitment to supporting its wounded servicemen. On the back, handwritten notes read:“Sold roses for the Army and Navy Club in drive for disabled sailors and soldiers of the World War.”It is also marked with the photographer’s credit: “Photo by Jimmy Jones, Boston Herald\". There is a minor crease in the bottom right corner of the photograph and the photo is in overall Good Condition. See Scans.
