[The Knights of the Ancient Order of the Mystic Chain (AOKMC) was a American secret fraternal society founded in 1870/1871 in Reading, Pennsylvania, by Freemasons and Knights of Pythias. It featured Arthurian-themed rituals, three degrees (later four), and aimed for fellowship with a peak membership of roughly 40,000, though it remained primarily popular in Pennsylvania.Key details about the AOKMC include.Origins & Purpose: Established as a fraternal benefit society, it was heavily influenced by the Knights of Pythias (21 founders were Pythians) and Freemasonry. The name originates from the Masonic \"Mystic Chain\" symbol of brotherly, interlocked hands.Structure: Lodges were called \"Castles\" and used an altar with an open Bible.Degrees: The original three degrees were Knighthood, Mystery, and Chivalry. A fourth, the Mark-degree, was added later for past masters.Rituals & Features: Known for initiation rituals that involved practical jokes, such as electric shocks or blindfolded water tricks.Auxiliaries: The order included a separate paramilitary uniformed rank and a female degree known as the Daughters of Ruth.Decline: The group struggled to expand beyond Pennsylvania, never became a top-tier national order, and declined after attempting to work in insurance in 1889. ]
