While studying art at Missouri State University,Romeroedited and published Realm, an acclaimed comics and science fiction fanzine that commissioned illustrations by Frank Frazetta, Vaughn Bode, Mike Kaluta, Barry Windsor Smith, Gil Kane, Carl Barks, Kelly Freas and other legendary artists of the Silver Age of comic books.
In 1973 he returned to Colorado Springs and co-founded Everyman Studios, an artists' collective with Darrel Anderson, Rick Berry, and William Kirk Kennedy (1953-2010) that published alternative newspapers and underground comix, plus an underground comix fanzine, Cascade Comix Monthly.
In 1981,Romeromoved the studio away from publishing and into animation production, including movie titles and effects, music videos, TV and theatrical commercials, and video game animation. The studio converted to digital production in 1991 and was renamed ARG! Cartoon Animation in 1994. Romero has more than 140 IMDb certified awards for his animated film and TV work.In 2022, clips from Romero's 1983-84 TV miniseries Video Game All Stars were licensed by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History for "Pause & Replay," an exhibit about the early beginnings of video games.
