Thank you so much for your interest in this Stigmaria Fossil Root. It has been found in an area off of the Des Moines River near a coal area in Polk County. It is approximately 300 million years old and was originally part of a tree root. The fossilized root is quite bold and deep, you can really see the natural form of its indented circular areas and intricate outer appearance. It measures about 4.5” long and about 2” thick. Close to this area used to be a shallow ancient sea and coastal area 300 million years ago and was surrounded by rooted trees like the Stigmaria and other nature upon the shores and moving up on the land. You can still find more current shells and sea based fossils in this area too.
