This is a lapel pin of which the front portion is sterling while the post, nut and added 40/8 drop down is not precious. The 40/8 is added or married later which is how many of these were put together. It is in good used condition with normal moderate wear. The dime is not part of the listing but is shown for size comparison only.
The American Legion \"40 & 8\" lapel pin.
combines two elements:
American Legion — the circular top portion with the classic emblem (a star with \"US\" in the center, surrounded by laurel wreaths)
40 & 8 (Société des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux) — the rectangular bottom tag showing \"40/8\"
The 40 & 8 is an honor society within the American Legion, founded in 1920. The name references French WWI boxcars that could carry 40 men or 8 horses. Membership is by invitation and recognizes distinguished service within the Legion.
This type of pin would have been worn by a member who belonged to both the American Legion and the 40 & 8 society.
