Vintage Stanley No. 84 Carpenter’s Rule – 2 Ft / 4 Fold – Boxwood & Brass – Rule & Level Co. Era (1890–1915)Description

Up for sale is an original Stanley No. 84 carpenter’s rule, a 2‑foot, 4‑fold boxwood rule with half‑bound brass, manufactured by the Stanley Rule & Level Co. in New Britain, Connecticut. This is an early production example, dating approximately 1890–1915, based on the multi‑line stamp:

  • STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO. WARRANTED

  • NEW BRITAIN, CONN rule features the classic boxwood body with brass joints and trim, a hallmark of Stanley’s high‑quality measuring tools from the pre‑Sweetheart era. These early Rule & Level Co. pieces are increasingly hard to find in clean, intact condition.

    Condition

This rule is in excellent vintage condition, especially for its age. The folding pin is intact, the half‑bound brass is complete, and all four sections fold smoothly with tight joints. The boxwood retains a lighter tone with normal age but no dark staining, and the lacquer finish shows no scratches, chips, cracks, or warping. All stampings are clear and fully legible. A remarkably well‑preserved example of a genuine early Stanley carpenter’s rule.

    Features
    • Authentic Stanley Rule & Level Co. production

    • 2 ft / 4 fold carpenter’s rule

    • Boxwood with lacquered finish

    • Half‑bound brass trim and joints

    • Early multi‑line stamp

    • Folds cleanly and securely

    • No structural damage or warping

    Why Collectors Want This Model

The No. 84 is one of Stanley’s classic folding carpenter’s rules, and early Rule & Level Co. examples are prized for their craftsmanship, materials, and historical value. Clean, intact specimens like this are increasingly scarce, especially with all brass hardware present and the folding pin unbroken.

Item will be carefully packed to protect the brass joints and boxwood sections. Ships quickly from Texas via USPS Ground Advantage.
