Vintage Stanley Bedrock No. 602 smooth plane. Bedrock planes were Stanley's premium line, with a heavy frog that seats flat against a machined surface in the bed, which gives a steadier, more chatter-free cut than a standard Bailey plane. The 602 is the compact 7" size with a 1-5/8" cutter, a good size for fine smoothing and small work. The cutter is marked "Made in USA" and "1 5/8 IN." and carries the Stanley logo. "Stanley" is cast into the frog, and the plane has a brass depth adjusting nut, a lever cap, a chip breaker, and a dark wood knob and tote.
A patent date of April 19, 1910 is stamped in the bed behind the frog, so the plane was made in 1910 or later. The model stamp is worn and hard to read in photos. I have not typed the plane, so please judge by the photos.
The plane is complete and in original, used condition. The japanning is worn in places, and the body has aged patina and spots of surface rust. The cutter and lever cap show rust and pitting. The tote has a few small paint specks, and the knob has light scratches in its finish. I see no cracks, breaks or repairs. I have not tested the plane in use, and the cutter will need cleaning and sharpening before use.
