This unique medal shows St Charles de Foucauld in profile. The date of 1858 represents his birth year and 1916 is the year of his death. This medal was likely commissioned shortly after his death.
St Charles de Foucauld was born to an aristocratic family. Orphaned by age six, he and his sister Mary were raised by their grandfather. After studying at Jesuit schools in Nancy and Paris France, he undertook officer training at the Saint-Cyr Military Academy. Upon graduating from the academy, he joined the cavalry where he served in Algeria and South Oran. St Charles was fascinated with the Arabs and left the cavalry to study Arabic and Hebrew and travel to Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. In 1890 he joined the Trappist Monks and spent time traveling throughout the Arabian region. On 1 December 1916, St Charles was killed when caught in the middle of combat between French forces and Arab insurrectionists. He was quickly considered to be a martyr of faith. H

The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece. It comes with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, ready for gift-giving, and was made in the USA.
