Soviet Russian Military Order The Cross of the Brave\' by Bulak-Balakhovich 1922-:
$60.00

S. N. Bulak-Balakhovich is a figure emblematic of the turbulent era of the Civil War, a time when \"Batkos\"—warlords and atamans—sprang up across Russia, ranging from Batko Makhno in Ukraine to Baron Ungern in Mongolia.
The first part of Bulak-Balakhovich’s surname was perfectly suited to his character: \"Bulak\" is a nickname—which eventually became part of the family name—signifying a person \"carried about by the wind.\"
After finally relocating to Poland around 1922, Bulak-Balakhovich established his own order—dubbed the \"Cross of the Brave\"—to honor fighters who had distinguished themselves within his detachments.
Bulak-Balakhovich declared that the Cross would be awarded to his \"partisan heroes\"; however, the high cost of manufacturing the insignia led to them being sold for cash instead. They were bestowed free of charge only upon \"useful individuals\" drawn from the ranks of the Entente powers, as well as the Estonian and Polish armies. Józef Piłsudski officially recognized this Cross, granting it equal status with official Polish combat decorations. Before long, enterprising counterfeiters began manufacturing copies of the Cross and selling them at a lower price. In response, Bulak-Balakhovich began personally signing the reverse side of each Cross and issuing the recipient a diploma containing a brief description of their heroic deed. In total, approximately 10,000 Crosses and up to one hundred accompanying stars were produced.
