Authorized by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, Space Station Freedom was designed as the United States' permanent orbital complex before budgetary constraints and programmatic redesigns ultimately merged its core architecture into the International Space Station (ISS) in 1993. Space Station Freedom is the direct structural, technological, and political foundation of the International Space Station. When NASA restructured Freedom into the ISS in 1993, they didn't throw out the engineering; they took Freedom's existing blueprints, stripped out the unbuildable features, and mated the surviving U.S. design directly to Russia's planned Mir-2 modules.
