Originating from the historic Nishijin weaving district of Kyoto, Japan, these pieces showcase masterful textile artistry utilizing fine silk and brilliant metallic gold threads (kinran) that beautifully catch and reflect light at different angles.
Thematic Scenes Depicted:
This cohesive triptych features elegant, classical narratives rendered in the traditional Yamato-e and Emakimono (picture scroll) art styles, illustrating the romanticized imperial court life of the Heian period (794–1185 AD):
1. The Imperial Excursion: An outdoor scene featuring a court noble on horseback surrounded by attendants traveling among timeless pine trees and vibrant autumn maple leaves.
2. The Ox-Cart Arrival: A classic Goshoguruma (imperial ox-cart) scene accented by heavy gold-woven clouds, portraying noble visitors arriving at a grand estate.
3. The Court Veranda: An intimate look inside a palace villa, depicting high-ranking noblewomen (nyobo) dressed in elaborate, layered kimonos relaxing near a veranda garden.
