Fitting a whole Nativity onto the front of a curved coat is the hard part. Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus each get a face and a gold halo, all under a stone arch with Bethlehem behind it. On the back, a huge star throws long rays over a stable on a hill, beside two palm trees. The same domes and palms carry on across his sack. His staff lifts out of the mitten, which is handy when you pack him away. Making him takes several days, from the first chisel cut to the last brushstroke. He stands 8.7 inches tall on a side table, a shelf or the mantel. Santa and the Holy Family share one figure, so he fits right in as Christian Christmas decor. A gift for a churchgoing family, and a Christmas figure that comes back out every year.
