DC COMICSDC COMICS DC STUDIOS DCU CINEMATIC UNIVERSE MEGA-KEYSUPERGIRL (2026)
In January of 2023, fan-favorite Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director turned DC Studios' Head JAMES GUNN formally announced that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow would be the second live-action film of the newly established DC Cinematic Universe, second only to the Studios' flagship film, Superman, which was then set to premiere in 2025.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Gunn elaborated, would be based on the DC Comics' maxiseries of the same name, which debuted its first of nine issues in July of 2021. Written by TOM KING and with covers and interior art by Bilquis Evely, the DC series explored a darker side of KARA ZOR-EL through her and her super-dog KRYPTO's intergalactic misadventures. Indeed, Supergirl's darker side was key to differentiating the character from her other iterations, from the recently depicted Flashpoint-esque Supergirl in The Flash (2024) and Melissa Benoist's Supergirl as seen on television from 2015-2021 to the heroine's own portrayal in (most) comics published by DC Comics.
In Superman, actress Milly Alcock introduced DC Studios' version of Supergirl to worldwide audiences with her brief cameo at the end of the film, and in 2026, Alcock's heroine flew into theaters as Supergirl on June 26th. "Woman of Tomorrow" had been dropped from the title a few months before the film's actual release, as the subtitle was repurposed as the add-on for the Superman sequel scheduled to premiere in summer 2027.
There had been other changes, too. WhileSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was a brightly water-colored journey through space in spite of its darker take on the titular hero, Supergirl had opted for bleaker colors and darker scenes, creating a contrast noticed by fans months ahead of the film's opening. And DC's most popular bounty hunter bastich, LOBO, had also been added to film, replacing the more generic bounty hunter depicted in the comics series.
Whether such changes had direct impact on Supergirl's performance in theaters is unknown, but the film performed poorly at the Box Office, bringing in only half the proceeds necessary to break even. It debuted on digital and then streaming shortly thereafter, and, somewhat surprisingly, Supergirl attracted a much larger audience worldwide than anyone would have expected. Audiences were interested, but most not to the extent of having to pay theatrical prices to see the film on the big screen.
Despite Supergirl's underperformance, the movie's success on HBO max and elsewhere was an encouraging sign. Alcock's Kara Zor-El will be among the co-stars of Superman: Man of Tomorrow next summer -- the film uniting current DC Studios' heroes against the mega-threat of BRAINIAC -- and DC Studios has doubled-down on its commitment to keep Supergirl at the fore of its opening chapter, "Gods and Monsters".
After this history, the main question on many fans and collectors' minds is whether the collectability of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow had been tarnished due to the box office returns of Supergirl. It's a good question, and one that seems to have a two-part answer. If those who saw Supergirl didn't like it or felt disappointed by its adaptation of King's original story, then it's understandable that the allure of the series' first issue might have faded. Any cinematic adaptation of a comic book series, as Marvel films have proved over the last 20 years, borrows only so much from the original source material, and Supergirl, in our opinion, doesn't deviate from this norm. The film's presentation, of course, when compared to Evely's artwork, certainly does, but whether this is a fair comparison remains a matter of opinion. In our own opinion, Supergirl was an enjoyable film, and, despite a less-than-terrific execution, it served its purpose to the over-arching story of the new DCU.
That it does, then, gives us our response to the "second part" of the two-part answer -- and that is, no, the Supergirl film should not, or doesn't, detract from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow's status as a comic book key. Supergirl will always be the second live-action film of this new cinematic DC Universe, and Woman of Tomorrow was the book that both inspired the film to be created in the first place and that gave the film the story framework to define the character as intended by DC Studios for its overall creative plan. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1 is the second step on what will be the much longer "Gods and Monsters" ladder, and to overlook Supergirl's contribution to the greater story would be short-sighted while rendering any serious collection of DCU keys noticeably incomplete.
Kara Zor-El's cinematic adventure, her unique story on film at this point in history, in your life and mine, is not over. Not even close. It, like the DCU itself, has only just begun, and that excitement alone is more than enough for any collection to get exactly what it deserves - today.SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW#1-A(OF 8)(VOL 1, AUG 2021)
