Rustic Lodge Interior Stone Fireplace Wicker Rockers Log Staircase RPPC c1910Description:
Outstanding earlyreal photo postcard, circa 1907–1918, showing the beautifully furnished interior of an unidentified rustic lodge, resort hotel, or substantial country retreat. The exceptionally detailed photograph captures a spacious common room or parlor with an enormous natural-stone fireplace, distinctive log staircase, wicker rocking chairs, hanging glass-shaded lamps, and elaborate period furnishings. An excellent architectural and social-history image from the heyday of America\'s early recreational lodges and summer resorts.
The most striking architectural feature is the staircase at left, constructed withnatural tree-trunk and branch railings, retaining the irregular forms and textures of the original timber. A massive unfinished wooden support post rises beside the staircase, while heavy exposed ceiling beams emphasize the building\'s rustic construction. The use of natural logs and stonework reflects theAdirondack rustic and Arts and Crafts traditionspopular in American resort architecture during the early twentieth century.
At the far end of the room stands a substantialfieldstone fireplace, built from large, irregularly shaped stones, with an impressive raised mantel and dark firebox. Numerous wicker and rattan rocking chairs are arranged throughout the room, including an extended row along the windowed right wall. Such comfortable, informal seating was particularly characteristic of turn-of-the-century hotels, mountain retreats, and resort sitting rooms, where guests gathered to read, converse, and enjoy the fire.
Additional details include two ornate suspendedmulti-globe lighting fixtureswith prominent glass chimneys, a turned-leg wooden occasional table with a lace centerpiece and decorative plant, framed wall artwork, potted foliage beside the fireplace, and what appears to be a piano or organ with an open music rest near the back wall. The high ceiling, long rectangular room, multiple tall windows, and abundance of seating suggest a communal gathering space rather than an ordinary domestic parlor.
The combination of rustic woodwork, fieldstone masonry, wicker furnishings, and traditional lighting is particularly evocative of the American resort and lodge movement of the 1900–1915 period. The room may have belonged to a mountain, woodland, or lakeside establishment, although the exact building and geographic location have not been established. No identifying sign or caption appears in the photograph.
Photographic dating:Original sepia-toned photographic postcard onAZO paper, with the distinctive stamp-box design featuringfour upward-pointing triangles, generally associated with approximately 1904–1918 production. The divided-back format further supports a date from 1907 onward. The reverse is entirely unused, with no correspondence, address, or postmark.
A particularly appealing early interior photograph with excellent architectural and decorative detail, of interest to collectors ofrustic architecture, historic hotels, Adirondack-style lodges, Arts and Crafts interiors, antique wicker furniture, fireplaces, early lighting, and resort history.
