For your consideration is an original autograph letter dated 30 October 1821, written from Galloway House and signed Galloway by George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway (17681834). Executed in brown ink on laid paper, the letter belongs firmly to the Regency period and was written from the historic family seat of the Earls of Galloway in Wigtownshire. George Stewart had succeeded his father as 8th Earl in 1806 and, by the date of this letter, was both a Scottish peer and Vice-Admiral of the Royal Navy, having enjoyed a substantial naval and parliamentary career.
The letter is addressed to Mr John Simpson and acknowledges earlier correspondence, requesting the forwarding of enclosed or associated material and referring to a retained copy and memorandum for reference. Its concise procedural character is consistent with estate, administrative, or intermediary business conducted through a noble household rather than personal or social correspondence. The use of the simple territorial signature Galloway accords with contemporary aristocratic practice and provides a clear autograph association with the reigning Earl.
George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway, had served in the Royal Navy from youth, seeing action during the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary Wars, and the Napoleonic era. He commanded several vessels, served on the Board of Admiralty, sat in Parliament before inheriting the peerage, and was promoted Rear-Admiral in 1810 and Vice-Admiral in 1819. He was also invested as a Knight of the Order of the Thistle in 1814 and served as Lord Lieutenant of both Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire during portions of his career.
The letter survives in sound original condition with expected folds, light age toning, and minor handling wear consistent with early nineteenth-century correspondence. Accompanying it is a later handwritten biographical reference card, which is not contemporary with the 1821 letter and should be regarded separately from the original manuscript. Correctly attributed, the piece represents an original signed letter of George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway, combining Scottish aristocratic, naval, and Regency-era historical interest.
