Royal Doulton Winston Churchill Centenary Bust, copy #10 of the limited edition, including the original wood plinth and housed in the original two-piece case
Designed by Eric J. Griffiths
Stoke-on-Trent: Royal Doulton, 1974
Condition: Fine
This is a large black basalt bust of Sir Winston S. Churchill produced by Royal Doulton in a limited and numbered edition in 1974 for the Centenary of Churchill's birth.
"Designed by E. J. Griffiths this black basalt bust is 11.5 inches high atop an 8 x 6.5 x 2.5 inch polished wood plinth. Black basalt is a rare medium for Doulton; it is more closely associated with Wedgwood... they have used it on only three other occasions - busts of HM the Queen, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh and HRH the Princess Royal. The Churchill Centenary Bust was produced in a limited edition of 750, in a black leatherette, satin-lined, brass-bound case."
This is copy number "10", so numbered on the base of the bust. Condition is fine, with no chips, cracks or appreciable flaws to report, the bust still housed in its original presentation case. The original two-piece, satin-lined case is expectedly scuffed, blemished, and dusty, but complete and intact.
More than two decades ago, it was already observed by Churchilliana expert Douglas Hall that this bust "is rarely seen on the secondary market" and already seeing prices as high as $1,500 USD.
The maker, Royal Doulton, was established in 1815 and bears the surname of one of its founders, John Doulton. It became Royal Doulton in 1901, when King Edward VII awarded the Royal Warrant to the Burslem factory. Eric J. Griffiths, who modelled this bust, became Royal Doulton’s Director of Sculpture in 1974, the year this bust was issued.
Please note that this large, fragile item will be packed with care and that shipping cost will depend on the specified shipping method preference and destination.
