Rare cabinet/boudoir photograph: THE U.S. MAN-OF-WAR CHARLESTON (C-2), a protected cruiser "at Anchor off CORONADO", CALIFORNIA (title is hard to read due to stain), with two American flags flying. This ship was only around for 11 or 12 years, 1888-1899 (see below). No date but circa the early 1900s. Measures 5x8.5 inches. Has an ink note on the reverse that says "The first man-o-war on the coast belonging to the U.S.".
USS Charleston (C-2) was the fourth United States navy protected cruiser, built by Union Iron Works in San Francisco and launched in 1888. The Charleston's service history included the Pacific from 1890 to 1896 and Spanish American War 1898-99. During that latter war it famously captured the island of Guam before bombarding Manila Bay and raising the American flag. In 1899 she wrecked near Luzon and the crew abandoned ship, making her the first steel-hulled ship lost by the US Navy.
