Approximate size: 10.5 inches x 3.5 inches

The Golden Eagle Mine has historical ties to the Deadwood Mining District, which is now part of the Klamath National Forest. The mine was a significant contributor to gold production in the area, producing about $1 million (approximately 48,500 ounces) in gold before 1931. However, the mine was closed at the time of data entry with no known plans to re-open. The region around Fort Jones, including the Cottonwood - Fort Jones - Yreka district, has a rich history of gold mining.

A former lode Au mine located 0.6 km (1,800 feet) SE of Hooperville, along Indian Creek, 41° 40\' 51\'\' North , 122° 50\' 48\'\' West. Mineralization is hosted in greenstone, diabase, and schist.

The mine was first worked prior to 1900, but no other production record has been found. The workings of the mine are underground, and more than 2000 feet of work has been done on the lowest level. The mine owner around 1935, George A. Milne, stated that the best way to open up new ore was to sink a shaft and open up the ore shoot below the stope 200 feet south of the shaft.

The Golden Eagle Mine has four veins, averaging 2 feet thick. The best ore came from a stope 200 feet south of the shaft. An intrusive dike in the vein forms the hanging wall of the vein in other places, suggesting that vein formation followed dike formation. Three of the veins dip east, and one dips west.

On February 4th 1894, J.D. Rockefeller took control of the Lake Superior Consolidation Mines, which owned this mine.

Lake Superior Consolidated Iron Mines was a company that was owned by John D. Rockefeller and held most of the iron ore on the Mesabi Range in Minnesota. The Mesabi Range was a significant source of iron ore, and Lake Superior ores have provided roughly 85% of U.S. demand in recent years. The consolidation of the mines was led by the formation of U.S. Steel in 1901, which was the world’s largest corporation at the time.

The Merritt family initially discovered the iron ore on the Mesabi Range and opened it to industry, but they lost everything to business titan John D. Rockefeller. In addition to iron and gold, the Lake Superior region was also known for its silver mining. For instance, Silver Islet, less than a mile offshore in Lake Superior, was once the site of the world’s richest silver mine. From 1870 to March 1884, the mine produced more than $3.25 million of silver, which is equivalent to $102.3 million in today\'s money.
