For your consideration, you are viewing an Antique piece of Military History. This is a Turkish M1935 cobbled together using recycled parts from older Austrian Steyr M1871/84 Knife Bayonet and Scabbard. These were produced by Steyr around the turn of the Century for use with the M1871/84 rifle, bayonets that remained in Steyr\'s armoury stores and were most likely used by Austro-Hungarian forces during WWI. This bayonet has a distinctive-shaped humpback handle grip and has Steyr\'s trademark as well as the Turkish ASFA mark on the pommel, and was possibly used by the Ottoman Empire in WW1 and WW2.

Both Austria and Germany supplied Ottoman Turkish forces with large quantities of bayonets of all types during WW1, and many bayonets were also exported as surplus to Turkey late and post WWI where the blades were all subsequently Turkish Factory Arsenal shortened to 9 7/8” during the 1930s for use with the 8 mm. Mauser M1893 and M1903 model rifles.

This bayonet was reworked by the Turks post WW1. As it is stamped with “AS.FA”, it stands for “Askeri Fabrikalar “ or the \"Ankara Military Factories Administration\", an organisation founded by Atatürk (The Father of Turkey) in 1920-23. Ataturk was tasked by the still reigning Sultan to unite Turkey’s ammunition industries after WWI.

In 1929, the ASFA began using Roman script and Western numbers on all production from its factories. You will not find the marking “ASFA’ on any weapon (rifle or bayonet) made or refurbished before 1929.

This is as strong and sturdy as the day it was made, and it is still very suitable to use for survival, hunting, or as a utility Knife.

#OEWG -STEYR: Oesterreichische Waffenfabrik-Gesellschaft (Austrian State Weapons Manufacturing Company) in Steyr has a long history. It was founded in 1830 by the blacksmith Leopold Werndl, who started a small armoury at Steyr in Upper Austria. Carrying on their father’s legacy, Leopold\'s sons Josef and Franz Werndl re-established the armoury in 1864. Josef Steyr launched Steyr Mannlicher in 1864 with the production of the modern breech-loading rifle system. In 1869, the company was named the Österreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft (ÖWG) or (OEWG). Amazingly, OEWG is still in business today, but is now known as \"Steyr Arms\"

CONDITION: This bayonet is from circa late 1800s, and reworked by the Turks in the 1920s, and is in good condition for its age and use in warfare. The grips are in very good condition with no missing pieces, but they have a few indent marks and fit tightly to the tang; the release/lock button is in working order. The 24.8 cm blade has a polished finish with scattered spot stains and an aged patina. The edge is not sharp and has flea bite dings. The remaining metal on the cross-guards, pommel and mortise has a polished finish with some scuff wear, indents and an aged patina. The scabbard has a refurbished blackened finish and is in very good condition with no dents, and it fits tightly with the bayonet. # Please note that the photographs form part of the description; Super-sized photos are available for viewing in the gallery to show the finer details and conditions.

DAMAGED & LOST MAIL: All items over $10 are sent with Tracking and Insurance. If your item is lost in the post, you need to contact Auspost directly to claim your insurance.

FRAGILE MAIL: If you require a Fragile Service, you will need to find a courier company that offers this service. Australia Post Extra Cover Insurance will cover you for loss only. Australia Post does not offer a fragile service so items cannot be covered for damage in transit. I always add lots of extra weight to the postage cost to make sure your item is well packed making its journey to you intact. I use heavy-duty bubble wrap, newspaper and recycled boxes.
