This authentic set of mid-century advertising memorabilia comes from the legendary and extravagant Mauna Loa Restaurant, which operated on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan from 1967 to 1971.
Sculpted into the distinct shape of traditional Polynesian tribal bongo drums, these rare pieces are believed to be part of the custom restaurant tableware designed by renowned mid-century artist Florian Gabriel.
The front profile of each drum features the incised "Mauna Loa" name, and the bases are uniquely stamped directly into the ceramic mold with "Design by Mauna Loa Detroit." Further showcasing their vintage authenticity, both shakers retain their original gold and black "Made in Japan" foil stickers on the bottom.
The striking visual aesthetic is achieved through a multi-textured finish, utilizing a high-gloss, deep brown glaze on the debossed geometric body that contrasts beautifully against a smooth, matte tan glaze meant to replicate a drum head skin.
