These vintage World War II souvenir wooden clogs, painted to commemorate the liberation of Belgium in 1944, I believe were brought home by my grandfather who served with British Forces in Holland and Belgium at that time.They are hand painted with the Union Flag and the Belgian flag alongside horseshoes and the year "1944". “Belgium” is painted on one of the clogs and “Mechelen”
on the other, which is a town in the Flanders’s region and which apparently, allied forces liberated in early September 1944. These small decorative wooden shoes (often called klompen) were often crafted or personalised as mementos by or for Allied troops immediately following the liberation of Western Europe in 1944.
