Rare Victorian 1892 British P1888 Lee Metford Modified Trench Knife Dagger VR :
$155.00

Up for sale is a fascinating piece of military history:

an authentic British Pattern 1888 Mark I, Type II bayonet that was field-modified and "trenched down" into a close-quarters fighting knife.

This piece has an incredible service history told directly through the extensive proof marks and issue stamps crisply preserved on the ricasso.

Historic Blade Markings & Proofs:

-Queen Victoria Royal Cypher: Features the official Crown over 'VR' (Victoria Regina) mark, proving manufacture during the Victorian era.

-Original Issue Date: Stamped '92, indicating it was originally forged in 1892 for the British Army's Lee-Metford rifles.

-Re-issue / Depot Stamps: Distinctly marked with '00 (1900) and '05 (1905) stamps, showing it was called back into depot rotation, re-tested, and sent back into service across multiple historical eras (likely seeing context or readiness during the Boer War and leading up to WWI).

The Modification:

To meet the brutal demands of early 20th-century trench warfare, the original crossguard and rifle muzzle attachment ring were professionally removed/ground flat to prevent snagging on field gear. The 16-inch single-edged blade retains its imposing length and profile, making it a stellar example of an armorers' or soldiers' theater-altered assault sidearm.

Condition Report:

-The knife is in solid, stable, "salty" battlefield condition with a beautiful natural dark patina appropriate for its age. The stamps are remarkably sharp and legible. The original two-piece wood grip scales show typical field wear and are held tightly by the original brass rivets. The steel pommel cap is securely intact. No scabbard is included.

Please review the high-resolution photos closely to evaluate the exact condition for yourself.
