Up for sale is an exceptional, cohesive set of 5 original Japanese watercolor paintings created during the mid-to-late Showa era (1975–1981). These charming, hand-painted works form a personal zodiac (junishi / 十二支) series, each depicting the animal of the corresponding year with graceful folk-style brushwork, soft colors, and expressive charm.
This is not a mass-produced print set—every piece is original, signed, and sealed by the same artist: 木下鹿之助 (Kinoshita Kanosuke/Shikanosuke), using a distinctive red “鹿” (deer) seal derived from the “鹿” character in the name. The artist is from Japan, creating this thoughtful series over several years.
The Story & Provenance – A Touching Cross-Cultural Friendship
These paintings were personally gifted by the artist to Keizaburo Yoda (依田 敬三郎), a Japanese individual (possibly an expatriate or someone with international ties).
The 1977 Snake piece features a handwritten English pencil dedication on the reverse from the artist himself—making this a heartfelt, bilingual gesture of friendship spanning years and cultures. The consecutive zodiac years (Monkey → Snake → Horse → Sheep/Goat → Rooster) suggest the artist thoughtfully selected and painted one each year, perhaps to mark special occasions or simply share joy through traditional symbolism.
The series evokes classic Japanese zodiac traits:
• 1975 (Wood Monkey) – Playful, mischievous monkey in oversized robes with hat, grapes, bamboo, and circular motifs (cleverness & adaptability).
• 1977 (Fire Snake) – Elegant deity or sage holding a gourd (longevity, wisdom, mystery).
• 1978 (Earth Horse) – Dynamic pair of galloping horses in ink wash (speed, vitality, freedom).
• 1979 (Earth Sheep/Goat) – Peaceful duo of rams (harmony, gentleness, perseverance).
• 1981 (Metal Rooster) – Proud, detailed rooster in vibrant ink & color (diligence, courage, good fortune).
Each painting is small/medium-sized, well-preserved (protected/framed or matted), with vivid unfaded colors with slight foxing but no major damage. These were sent to me from my uncle who is a Buddhist Monk in Yamagata I think around 25 years ago. Fun fact my uncle rides a Harley🤔
