$90.00

The Pilot Knob Master Set

This exceptional 6-piece collection (totaling 236 grams / 1180 carats) represents a rare opportunity to own \"gem-quality\" industrial relics from the historic Pilot Knob Iron Company. These pieces range from deep forest greens and royal purples to striking tri-color swirls. Most notably, several specimens exhibit a stunning vivid pink/purple fluorescence under 365nm UV light, revealing the unique chemical footprint of 19th-century Missouri iron smelting.

Specimen Breakdown:

Piece #1: 360ct – Elegant Gray with purple undertones.

Piece #2: 210ct – Solid, deep Purple.

Piece #3: 80ct – Rare Blue Swirl \"Electric\" pattern.

Piece #4: 85ct – Forest Green.

Piece #5: 185ct – Marbled Green Swirl.

Piece #6: 245ct – Tri-color Purple/Gray/Blue Swirl.

History: Fire, Iron, and the Battle of Fort Davidson

The iron furnaces of Pilot Knob were established around 1848 and became a vital industrial hub for the Union during the Civil War. The iron produced here was transported via the Iron Mountain Railroad to St. Louis to bolster the war effort.

The furnaces were at the heart of one of the bloodiest encounters in Missouri: the Battle of Pilot Knob on September 27, 1864. Confederate Major General Sterling Price led a massive assault on the Union\'s Fort Davidson. During the retreat and subsequent raids, the original furnace was destroyed. It was rebuilt in 1865, and mining operations continued to shape the region for over 130 years, eventually transitioning from surface to deep underground mining before concluding in the late 20th century.
