A scarce and visually engaging Victorian children’s book, illustrated withmounted chromolithographs printed in colors and gold, together with numerous woodcut illustrations throughout. Publisher Marcus Ward was among the finest producers of decorative color books in the period, and this volume reflects that tradition with richly printed plates and a striking original binding.
sale cataloguing (Sotheby’s) notes“two possibly by Kate Greenaway,”placing the work within the circle of late 19th-century children’s illustration associated with her style, though not firmly attributed.
The book is particularly appealing for itsseries of mounted chromolithographic plates, each framed within decorative borders, retaining strong color and visual charm. The original green cloth binding, with gilt and black decoration, remains highly attractive and displays well.
Condition:A very good copy. Frontispiece leaf detached (present). Binding remains firm overall. Foxing to front and rear endpapers only; text is clean and without foxing. Plates remain bright and well-preserved. 1888 Christmas gift inscription to front endpaper. A solid, bright,very gooddisplayable copy with the primary visual elements intact.
A genuinely elusive Marcus Ward production, seldom encountered in the market, combining decorative Victorian binding, chromolithographic illustration, and a possible Greenaway connection—an appealing acquisition for collectors of 19th-century illustrated books.
