How it was formed :many thousands of years ago saltwater marsh peat that had regularly accumulated new layers of silt and organic matter, which created the “growth rings” appearance .A Great Piddock colony had taken up residency and bored holes into the peat when it was still soft.Changes in sea levels and many years of accumulated silt and organic matter compressed and buried the black sample deep enough that sunlight and oxygen no longer reached it.The anerobic environment fossilized and turned the sample various shades of black, and the Great Piddocks died or moved on.
