Antique c.1900-1925 Portuguese "Galo de Barcelos" Rooster Folk Art Pottery. A polychrome painted rooster with metallic gold accents, and a line of holes on each wing (possibly meant to hold toothpicks) and a hole on the back. Unsigned. Similar pieces can be found at the Museu de Olaria in Barcelos, Portugal.
The story associated with Galo de Barcelos goes: During medieval times,a Galician pilgrim walking the Way of Saint James passed through Barcelos and was unjustly accused of theft. Condemned to hang, he asked to be taken before the judge, who was dining at that very moment. In front of everyone he pointed to a roasted rooster on the table and declared that, if he were innocent, the bird would rise and crow. The laughter stopped when the rooster, already on the plate, stood up and crowed. The pilgrim was freed, and the tale became the very heart of Barcelos’ identity.
