Here is a rare, antique tartan ware snuff box with hand-written provenance note inside with a Rhode Island First Regiment Civil War connection.
The note reads:'The Rev. & Mrs. Augustus Woodbury bought this while traveling in Europe at Morgan Brothers, London, Eng. - They were George Struckland's uncle & aunt - given to Dolly B. by Maude Proctor in Sept. 1939 - 50 years old or more.'
Augustus Woodbury was a Civil War Chaplain.He wrote; 'A Narrative of the Campaign of the First Rhode Island Regiment, in the Spring and Summer of 1861'.
'Woodbury and the Rhode Island volunteers who responded to Lincoln’s call were among the first units to mobilize in the Civil War. At thirty-seven, he was the same age as his commander, Ambrose Burnside.'.The box measures 2- 3/4 inches in diameter, by 7/8ths of an inch high.
