Rare Antique Qing Dynasty Tibetan Copper Pecha Scripture Box 18th-19th Century:

Rare Antique Qing Dynasty Tibetan Copper Buddhist Scripture Box (Pecha Box / Manuscript Case)
This is an authentic late Qing Dynasty (18th–19th century) Tibetan copper pecha box, specially made to store and protect traditional Tibetan Buddhist unbound manuscript leaves (pecha). The long, narrow form is classic for pecha, which evolved from Indian palm-leaf manuscripts and remain highly sacred in Tibetan Buddhism as embodiments of the Dharma.
- Front (Lid): Beautifully worked in high-relief repoussé with three seated Buddhist figures. The central figure is Shakyamuni Buddha, seated with both hands resting in the lap (in a gesture resembling dhyana mudra / meditation or teaching mudra). He is flanked by two Bodhisattvas. The figures are surrounded by elegant lotus flowers and scrolling foliage (volutes). The style is classic Tibetan Buddhist, with refined proportions, serene expressions, and traditional iconography typical of Qing-period Himalayan metalwork.- Reverse: Simple and elegant, featuring a central circular embossed double vajra (visvavajra / crossed vajra), a powerful Buddhist symbol of indestructibility, stability, and the union of method and wisdom.- Borders decorated with continuous beaded or reeded (lotus-petal style) edges, showing fine hand-hammered craftsmanship.- Interior still contains original aged Tibetan-script pecha manuscript leaves (loose pages with traditional borders and handwriting/printing in classic Tibetan script). Paper shows natural age toning and wear consistent with genuine period use.
Historical & Cultural Significance:During the Qing Dynasty, especially from the Qianlong period onward, Tibetan Buddhism received strong imperial patronage. Copper and copper-alloy boxes and covers of this type were produced for monastic use or private devotion to safely house sacred texts. The embossed deities not only decorate but also spiritually protect the contents. Owning and preserving such a box and its scriptures is considered highly meritorious in Tibetan Buddhist practice. Metal pecha boxes of this quality and completeness (with original leaves) are relatively scarce compared to wooden covers.
Condition:Good antique condition with natural age-related patina, minor surface wear, light dents and scratches consistent with age and use. No major repairs visible. The copper has developed a rich, warm brown tone. Manuscript leaves are aged but intact and readable. Please examine all photos carefully as they form part of the description.
Dimensions (measured approximately):- Length: 35.5 cm (approx.14 inches)- Width: 8.05 cm (approx. 8.05 cm / 3.17 inches)- Thickness: 3 cm (approx. 1.18 inches)This is a genuine period piece with excellent presence, ideal for collectors of Tibetan Buddhist art, Himalayan metalwork, Qing Dynasty religious artifacts, or sacred manuscript containers. Perfect for display, study, or continued respectful use. Please feel free to message with any questions. Serious collectors welcome!
