The Lakeside pencil sharpener was invented by Frank B. Canode and manufactured by the Lakeside Specialty Company of Chicago, Illinois, during the early 20th century. The patent was applied for in 1904, and the machine was actively marketed and sold between 1904 and 1911.
It features a large, rotary flat blade cutting cylinder made of case-hardened steel, containing 60 diagonal cutting edges on its periphery.
Advertisements claimed it had "ten times the cutting surface of any other sharpener" and could sharpen a new pencil in about 15 revolutions of the hand crank.
