Tibetan Buddhist thangka, Mongolian workshop, 19th century,Protector Deity Pehar Retinue
An exceptionalnineteenth-century thangka from the Mongolian school, depicting the completepentad of Pehar Gyalpo, the supreme worldly protector of the Tibeto-MongolianBuddhist world.The central figure is the Activity King (Thinley gyiGyalpo), distinguished by his white body, three faces, and six arms.He isbrilliantly rendered riding a white snow lion with a turquoise mane, an emblemof fearlessness and the spiritual strength of the Mongolian state.
The thangka is amasterclass in the Ikh Khuree style, utilizing rich mineral pigments on ahand-primed cotton ground.The central deity is surrounded by the fourother \"Kings\" (Ku-nga), each mounted on their respective vehicles:the elephant, the horse, and the lion.At the top center, the lineage isestablished through a red manifestation of the protector or a presiding gurufigure.
The verso bears a pencilinscription in Russian:“Монголия XIX век”[“Mongolia, 19th century”].
