This sale is for a pair of seemingly very rare vintage bookmarks published by the West Baffin Eskimo Co-Operative in 1971 featuring prints of two original felt-tip drawings by renowned Inuit Kinngait (Cape Dorset) artist Kingmeata Etidlooie (1915-1989). We were unable to find another example of either of these bookmarks anywhere online and ephemeral pieces such as these seem rather scarce. The back of the bookmarks are marked as follows: BY KINGMEATA. © 1971 WEST BAFFIN ESKIMO CO-OPERATIVE. Kingmeata\'s printed Inuktut signature ᑭᒥᐊᑕ appears on each bookmark at \"ground\" level next to each figure. The bookmarks measure 7 1/2” x 2”. They both appear to be free of tears, though they do exhibit wear including aging, yellowing, wrinkles, creases, edge wear, bumped/curled corners, and dirty and/or stained areas (see pictures). One of the bookmarks also has what appears to be a pen scribble on it.
We are unsure for what purpose the bookmarks were originally distributed, though we suspect they may have been promotional items, perhaps coinciding with the release of the coveted 1971 Kinngait portfolio of \"Color Drawings by Fifteen Cape Dorset Artists\" which featured a print of one of Kingmeata\'s inspiring drawings. We were able to track down archives of both of her original drawings by using the Cape Dorset Archive of the Iningat Ilagiit database, in partnership with the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and Digital Museums Canada. The archive lists the unusual sun-like figure as Object Number CD.23.246 (Digital ID 19638) and the equally unusual bird or seal-like figure is listed as Object Number CD.23.384 (Digital ID 20404). Both can be found by searching these numbers at the archive website.
Kingmeata Etidlooie was born around 1915 in a small camp called Itinik near Lake Harbour and later in life, in the mid-1960s, settled in Kinngait. She only began carving and drawing after the death of her first husband and by the time she met and married her second husband Etidloie Etidloie, himself a noted graphic artist, Kingmeata had established herself as an accomplished artist. We highly recommend taking your time looking through the very large collection of her wonderful work documented in the Cape Dorset Archive. As prolific as she was creative, the archive includes over 3000 examples of her work and you will be hard pressed to find two that are the same.
