This rare firefighter’s hanten is made from layers of indigo-dyed cotton, densely hand-stitched with traditional sashiko. The fine stitching strengthened and thickened the garment, helping to protect firefighters from heat and sparks.
The contrasting sarasa-patterned cotton lining makes this more unusual and highly collectible.
