Outstanding Opalescent Coin Spot Kerosene / Oil Stand Lamp — La Belle Glass Co. 1883
A truly exceptional and unusually beautiful antique kerosene / oil stand lamp featuring an opalescent coin spot font and an extraordinary La Belle Glass Co. patented drip-foot stem and base, dated May 8, 1883.
The font pattern is identified in Thuro’s Glass Oil Lamps, Book 2, page 101-J, where it appears on a footed hand lamp identified as the “Angela.” The magnificent stem and base are described in Thuro, Book 3, page 15, as a product of the La Belle Glass Co.
The Stem & Base:The stem on this lamp is particularly striking and, in my opinion, one of the prettiest lamp stems you will encounter.
It features a wonderfully elaborate combination of diagonal spiral swirls over a band of vertical optic prisms, creating a fascinating effect as the glass catches the light. The stem rises from a substantial glass base with the distinctive drip foot/lip, designed to catch any oil that might drip from the burner.
Most importantly for collectors, the base is embossed “PAT. MAY 8 1883,” providing an important documented date for this beautiful form.
The combination of the unusual opalescent coin-spot font, elaborate optic stem, patented drip-foot base, and documented La Belle Glass Co. connection makes this a particularly appealing lamp for the serious glass and oil-lamp collector.
Font:The font is a beautiful clear/opalescent glass with raised coin-spot decoration covering the rounded body. The spots vary in size and create a wonderful dimensional appearance, especially when viewed against light.
The font is fitted with the threaded collar for a No. 1 burner.
Measurements:
Height: approximately 9 1/4” to the top of the brass collar
Base diameter: approximately 4 5/8”
Collar threading: approximately 7/8” for a No. 1 burner
(Measurements may vary slightly.)
A Remarkable Antique Oil Lamp:This is an especially attractive example for anyone collecting American glass oil lamps, La Belle Glass Co. lamps, patented lamp components, or unusual opalescent/coin-spot glass.
The beautifully modeled stem is the real showpiece, with its combination of spiral and optic decoration, while the embossed 1883 patent date adds an important historical detail - agorgeous and uncommon lamp with tremendous visual appeal and excellent collector interest.
