Rare 1880s U.S. Indian Department Brass Coat Button nonMagnetic - Standing Rock For Sale

This artifact is in excellent, high-grade historical condition. It features a completely intact, uncrushed, and straight copper wire attachment loop (shank) on the reverse. The button retains a beautiful, natural olive-brown aged brass patina. It has deliberately been left uncleaned and unpolished to preserve its historical integrity and value. The raised lettering on both the front face and backmark remains remarkably crisp and legible. This button was recovered near Beaver Bay (on Lake Oahe), located approximately 15 miles west of Linton, North Dakota. This specific location carries immense historical significance. In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant signed an Executive Order extending the eastern boundary of the Standing Rock Indian Agency across the Missouri River along Beaver Creek. This area was also home to the historic 1888 river town of Emmonsburg, a major trading hub and ferry crossing between settlers and reservation lands. The button's high-quality all-brass construction perfectly explains how it survived decades near the old river channel without rusting away.
