The Stagecoach Era's Peak: In 1866, this stage line was the literal lifeline of the Pacific Northwest. The Oregon Stage Company held the lucrative U.S. Mail contract, worth roughly $90,000 a year, ensuring daily communication between California and the isolated communities of the Willamette Valley.
The "Through" Passenger Infrastructure: Seeing passengers coming all the way from Sacramento to Portland via Concord stagecoaches highlights how interconnected the West Coast was trying to become right after the Civil War, despite grueling 60+ hour nonstop bone-rattling rides.
The Looming End: This document captures a golden hour. Within a decade and a half of this bill being signed, the Oregon and California Railroad would push through the Siskiyou Mountains, rendering these multi-day stagecoach relay routes completely obsolete.
