ROMAN POLANSKI(born 1933)is an internationally renowned filmmaker, actor, and screenwriter whose distinctive body of work has encompassed psychological drama, horror, mystery, and suspense. Polanski emerged as a major figure in European cinema before gaining international recognition with films including KNIFE IN THE WATER (1962), REPULSION (1965), and CUL-DE-SAC (1966). He subsequently directed such landmark productions as ROSEMARY\'S BABY (1968), CHINATOWN (1974), and THE TENANT (1976), establishing a filmmaking style frequently characterized by psychological isolation, paranoia, and increasingly unsettling environments.
In THE TENANT, Polanski served as both director and leading actor, portraying Trelkovsky, a withdrawn man whose experiences in a Paris apartment building develop into an increasingly disturbing crisis of identity and perception. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Polanski has received numerous international honors for his filmmaking, including the Academy Award for Best Director for THE PIANIST (2002).
