Reverend & Cantor E. Zaludkowski (Elias/Eliyahu Zaludkowski, 1888–1943) was a distinguished Jewish cantor, composer, musicologist, author, and authority on Jewish liturgical and folk music. A highly accomplished musician with advanced musical training in Europe, Zaludkowski served as a professor of singing and music theory at the Imperial Conservatory in Rostov-on-Don (southwestern Russia) and later became an influential figure in American Jewish musical life.
He was a prolific composer and writer whose work focused particularly on the preservation, study, and development of Jewish liturgical music, cantorial tradition, and Jewish folk song. His writings included Kultur-Treger fun der Yidisher Liturgie (“Culture Bearers of Jewish Liturgy”), an important biographical and historical study of cantors and synagogue musicians. His musical compositions included settings of Hebrew and Yiddish poetry as well as arrangements of traditional liturgical melodies.
