This 1881 Sexennial Record is highly significant as it contains the early alumni record for John Wesley Manning (1857–1922). Born into slavery in North Carolina, Manning escaped to New Haven with his family during the Civil War. He went on to graduate from Yale College in 1881, making him one of the earliest identified Black graduates in Yale University's history. Following his time at Yale, Manning became a highly prominent educator and pioneering high school principal in Knoxville, Tennessee.
