"The Virgin of Cortes (Nuestra Señora de Cortes) is the patron saint of Alcaraz, a historic town located in the province of Albacete, Castile-La Mancha, Spain. She is one of the most deeply revered religious figures in the region, and her sanctuary is a major pilgrimage site.
According to popular tradition, the devotion dates back to May 1, 1222. A local shepherd named Francisco Álvarez, who was from the nearby village of Solanilla, was tending his sheep on a hill then known as Cerro de la Atalaya. Suddenly, the sky lit up, celestial music played, and the Virgin Mary appeared inside the hollow of a holm oak tree."
