The USS Jeannette, originally a British steam yacht, was trapped in Arctic pack ice for 21 months, crushed by ice pressure, and sunk north of Siberia on June 13, 1881. Commanded by Lieutenant Commander George W. De Long, the expedition was attempting to reach the North Pole via the Bering Strait when the surrounding ice locked the ship in place, starting a long and ultimately fatal drift
